Many might not realize that the dish was brought over to America by way of Hungarian immigrants, where it morphed from a stew into a one-pot noodle dish made with readily available ingredients. There&#8217;s lots of room for adding your own spices or vegetarian options, too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a7c42af9-44f9-43ab-8b84-32237350a654\"><strong>INGREDIENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dd84f687-b28e-4516-8aa8-d3d0e9e35e7c\">1 &#8211; 16 oz. pkg of macaroni (or favorite pasta shape!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-272a52e2-1a57-4efc-8dbe-e49954247c5c\">2 lbs. (32 oz.) ground beef\/hamburger (or meatless veggie crumbles)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-67be0ade-457b-4538-ba32-0a636c990963\">1 yellow or white onion (chopped)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-942910d4-f291-4898-b6b8-85cea29bdc69\">2 &#8211; 15 oz. cans of canned tomatoes (whole or diced)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-852ab0c5-29ca-4f3c-afbf-0ac54f60eedc\">3 cups water<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1460ea96-7727-4e17-aee1-efc8971228fa\">1 tsp. salt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-037a35c4-4074-4a7c-af63-71aa37fe0b5d\">1\/2 tsp. pepper<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-f4d2ed5b-e4e3-40ce-9b12-83b9d6d9760e\"><em>OPTIONAL flavors to add (to taste): soy sauce, paprika, Italian seasonings, garlic<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-d52898ff-6de1-4b34-ae4d-d55875d55457\">INSTRUCTIONS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol id=\"block-b7109520-e9d2-4461-97ef-b1ac7f150408\"><li>Brown the meat (or meat substitute!) in a large pot. Drain off excess grease, leaving 2-3 Tbsp in the pot.<\/li><li>Add chopped onion to the pot, and continue to cook for 5 minutes (or until onions become slightly translucent).<\/li><li>Add pasta, tomatoes, water, salt and pepper, and any other spices or flavorings that you might like to add!<\/li><li>Simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until pasta is cooked and water has mostly been absorbed.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-1da17ebf-d5e2-4f03-a49c-21c258883301\">PRO TIP: Try adding your favorite shredded cheese on top just before serving!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-a42abf4c-6f85-4d71-a769-f636bcffe5c1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/kodomokidsus.files.wordpress.com\/2021\/06\/goulash-1.jpeg?w=1024\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is goulash-1.jpeg\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div><!-- .vgblk-rw-wrapper -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now, don&#8217;t let the title fool you&#8230; Grandma definitely made traditional Hungarian goulash (complete with smoky Hungarian paprika), but this American adaptation was a favorite of mine as a child.
